Mission: Circle X Theatre Co. is a not-for-profit ensemble of artists dedicated to highly provocative, boldly theatrical productions of new and rarely-seen plays and the development of new works for the stage. We believe in imagination over budget, adrenaline over inertia, irreverence over convention and excellence over all.

About our facility: Circle X produces out of Atwater Village Theatre, a multi-disciplinary performance facility in the Atwater Village neighborhood of northeastern Los Angeles. AVT is located at 3269 Casitas Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90039. The facility has two 99-seat theatres, two smaller black-box spaces, and several offices. For leasing information, please click here.

About the company: Circle X was founded in 1996 by seven theatre artists drawn together by the desire for an artistic home in Los Angeles focused on the development and production of new works for the stage. We strive for imaginative solutions at the core of every element of our productions, beyond our selection of thought-provoking, highly theatrical plays. This ethos extends to everything from design, performance and direction to administration and marketing, creating the unique aesthetic for which Circle X is known.

Today, through our new play development programs, we support Los Angeles-based theatre artists interested in taking new plays from inception to production, and launching them onto a life beyond our stages.

Led by our longtime staff of local artists as well as a few relatively new team members, our ensemble continues its commitment to making kick-ass theatre and sharing it with the community at large.

In 2009, we co-founded Atwater Village Theatre Complex (AVT) to provide space for our own work as well as to share it with other resident companies and independent productions. In service to extending our creative home with others, it has since become a thriving and instrumental part of the Los Angeles theatre community. Circle X has been solely responsible for the management and maintenance of AVT since 2011.

What is a Circle X Play?

A Circle X play makes your throat hurt and cracks your guts open. It’s the perfect beat of music that drops so hard you think you’re at the top of a roller coaster that might not have any more tracks. It’s the impossible magic of a fully realized world that otherwise, only could live in our imaginations. It’s the laugh that escapes because you couldn’t control it (whether it’s ok or not). It’s the story that fucks you up so much you can’t talk about it for a little while. Not because it was sentimental or manipulating, but because the gravity surprised you. A play that trusts and expects we are smart enough to catch up but never feel ahead of. It’s the play that makes your life better because you were in that room, not because it’s trying to teach you something or trying to dress up to feel fancy. It’s beautiful because it’s raw. It’s the crux of empathy. It’s when you whisper “fuck yeah” involuntarily because you are human.
